60 years of independence. Happy birthday, Zambia!

Naturecrazi joins our valued partner in Zambia, Kafunta Safaris, in raising a glass to celebrate this incredible country that holds a special place in our hearts. Cheers!

Let’s mark this moment with some cool facts about this destination:

  • 60 years of independence: Zambia was born on 24 October 1964.
  • 70+ languages: Zambia is a cultural melting pot with over 70 tribes and rich traditions.
  • Victoria Falls: The world’s largest curtain of water 1.7 km wide, and twice as tall as Niagara!
  • Wildlife wonderland: With 20 national parks and 34 game management areas, Zambia is one of Africa’s top wildlife destinations.
  • Think Big: Zambia is three times bigger than the UK, about the same size as California, but still 12 times smaller than China!
  • Dr Livingstone, I presume? Yes, the famous explorer’s journey ended in Zambia (on 01 May 1873). His heart was buried in Chitambo (in present-day Central Province), while his body was carried back to the UK for burial at Westminster Abbey.
  • Nshima & Mosi: The perfect Zambian culinary duo! Nshima, our staple maize dish, is enjoyed daily with almost everything, while Mosi, our national beer, takes its name from the mighty Mosi-oa-Tunya, Victoria Falls, meaning “the smoke that thunders.” Cheers to that too!
  • Elephant haven: Over 20 000 elephants roam our land – thanks to dedicated conservation efforts.
  • One Zambia, One Nation: A proud declaration of unity and harmony for Zambia’s 70+ tribes.
  • Copperbelt: Zambia is the 2nd largest copper producer in Africa and ranks 9th in the word!
  • Zambezi River: The river that inspired our country’s name! Stretching as the fourth longest river in Africa, it flows through our beautiful landscapes and nourishes the rich ecosystems of Zambia.
  • Bold flag: The vibrant colors tell our story: green represents our lush landscapes, red reflects our fight for freedom, black honors our people, and orange symbolizes our copper wealth. And let’s not forget the African Fish Eagle, our national bird, soaring high as a symbol of freedom and resilience in the face of challenges!
  • Bushwalk: Zambia (South Luangwa) is the birth place of the walking safari, offering immersive experiences in the wilderness!
  • Landlocked: Zambia is a little gem with no access to the sea, but boasts the highest number of borders for any landlocked country—eight in total! (Angola, Botswana, Democratic Republic of Congo, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Tanzania, and Zimbabwe).
  • Best tourism people: Zambia is not only home to incredible wildlife, but also to the most welcoming and dedicated tourism professional you’ll ever meet! Seriously, we might be biased because Kafunta Safaris is our Zambia partner, but we’re confident you’ll agree with us!
  • Visit Zambia: But don’t take our word for it – visit Zambia yourself! Explore the South Luangwa and Lower Zambezi National Park with our Wilderness Jewels Journey.
